OFFICIAL WEBSITE ABUSE ABATEMENT POLICY

As a means of insuring the privacy of AZ Arboretum Dot org website users, we do not regularly log and file the IPs of
our website users.  However, on certain occasions, specific types of abuse of the AZ Arboretum Dot org website and
its volunteers and staff may require temporary logging and filing of IP address information in order to identify abusers
and take steps to end the abuse. These logs are kept for 180 days, and repeat offenders are reported to their ISPs.
The following procedures define specifically how this is to be done.

Definition and explanation of terms:

ISP Internet Service Provider.  This is anyone who provides Internet service to consumers, businesses or any user.

IP number  refers to the Internet Protocol address, which is a unique number assigned to every computer connected
to the Internet.

A computer's IP number may be static and unchanging or may be assigned dynamically, changing every time that computer connects to the Internet.  Most dial-up Internet connections and many broadband connections such as
cable or DSL are dynamic.  When a computer receives a dynamic IP address it is typically one of a bank or range of addresses used by that computer's ISP. Therefore, even if a user has a different IP every time s/he accesses a website, the users ISP can be identified if they're within a certain range.  The ISP can often then identify the user from this address.

IP Logging to Address Direct Threats

Direct threats are defined as threats against  specific people or small, easily identifiable groups of people, and
repeated emails and posts of a harassing, defaming or slanderous nature. These threats also include any incidents of slander, libel, or defamation of staff and volunteers for AZ Arboretum Dot Org regarding ownership and/or content of this website.

Please note that using multiple email addresses and a variety of "names" does not prevent logging of individual IP address, which will be forwarded to the proper authorities when continued instances of abuse occur.

AZ Arboretum Dot org will begin logging and storing IP numbers of website users in the case that a direct threat or abusive, slanderous comments are made or reported to the webmaster and/or the design team.

The purpose of logging IP numbers is to identify the abusing poster/emailer, their location, and their service provider in the event that s/he attempts to post/email again using the same name or using an alias or assumed name that reveals the same IP number as a previous post/email.

Perceived instances of direct threats and abuse will be logged and reported to the appropriate ISP.

Copies of abusive emails will also be filed with local municipal court authorities if deemed necessary.

IP Logging Procedures

Website user IPs will be logged for a period of 90 days or longer as necessary, after the threatening poster/emailer
has sent any additional emails to theAZ Arboretum Dot org webmaster.

The purpose of logging IPs is to establish a pattern of access of the threatening poster/emailer, so as to determine if s/he is using a static IP address, a dynamic address within a range of IPs or an utterly dynamic address with no obvious pattern.

Information obtained about a threatening poster/emailer will be preserved in a confidential and secure manner until presented to the proper authorities for appropriate legal action.

As a threatening poster's IP information is gathered, all other IP log information outside of a threatening poster's
IP will be purged after 30 days.

Information obtained from logging of IPs may be used as directed by the webmaster for AZ Arboretum Dot org.
This may include contacting ISPs regarding possible violations of their terms of service by the threatening posters; contacting the owner of a computer identified as the source of the posts; or any such other measures as may resolve the abuse as authorized by AZ Arboretum Dot org.
